On September 4, 1939, three Dallas women-Betty Jane Stewart Miller, Jerry Jane Wynne, and Margarett Doggett (now Mrs. Trammel) Crow)-were returning from a European tour aboard the British liner Athenia when it was torpedoed by a Nazi submarine. The three were rescued without injury.
